Lucy's Books is a locally owned and operated independent bookstore in beautiful, historic downtown Astoria, Oregon. Find us a block and a half south of the mighty Columbia River. Owner/manager/janitor Laura Snyder (that's me!) opened the store (with the help of her infant son Tim, daughter Ani, and husband Jon and his parents), in August of 1998, a bad time, some say, to open a small, independent bookstore. Bucking the national trend toward big box business, Lower Columbia residents from both sides of the river have spoken here with their voices and dollars of their commitment to vibrant communities.
At Lucy's we are committed to the idea of community, through advocacy and events, by bringing people together toward a common joyful purpose (reading books!), by disseminating information on topics important to our community from the LNG crisis to issues in our public schools (Laura is an elected member of the Astoria School Board).
From northwest fiction writers like Tom Spanbauer, to renowned naturalists like Robert Michael Pyle and Californian Freeman House, from acclaimed children's author Petra Mathers to sex advice columnist Dan Savage, Lucy's has welcomed a rich variety of northwest talent to present their work for our appreciative patrons.
Lucy's offers 20% off to the public school districts of the region and we'll offer you 20% off any book you buy to donate to our public schools. Lucy's supports our local children's museum, our local community radio station, our Women's Resource Center, VOCA, our local camps for girls and boys who have survived sexual abuse, and our North Coast Land Conservancy, among many other recipients of material, money, and time. Globally we support Partners in Health, we sponsor a Congolese woman through Women for Women International, and we contribute to the best journalism out there, Democracy Now.
Lucy's small space holds a rich, lovingly and carefully chosen variety of high caliber fiction, memoir, northwest regional lore, poetry, parenting, health, spirituality, nature and travel, and of course children's titles. You'll also find the perfect journals, calendars, and cards. Special orders are welcome, and we can get almost anything, quickly and with a smile.
Enjoy this web site, let me know what you think, and know that there is no substitute for the experience of holding a book, and having a kindred literary spirit with whom to talk about it. I don't sell books on line - I'm in it for the conversations! But you can always email or call me and I'll be happy to send you a book. Shopping on line for books, while never as good as the real thing, can still support the independent spirit of local bookstores. Many independent stores have web sites; go there before the book/drug/electronics/toy store next time! You'll be pleased by what you find.
In celebration of Lucy's upcoming 10th anniversary year, we are excited to offer you the opportunity to be
a) quite fashionable
and b) a walking, talking advertisement for our little shop!
Look for Lucy's t-shirts on sale!
My gratitude is immeasurable to the community that is responsible for our 9.5 happy, healthy years in business. Thank you for being the heartbeat of this independent business.
